CHAPTER 19

After Bernice’s bombshell, the crime team continued reporting on their interrogations and activities.

“I’m still waiting for the contact info for Blake Bowen’s agent,” said Patty. “He supposedly arranged for the plane that brought her home early from Mexico,” she explained to the group.

“She said she would email it to you when they arrived home after visiting the police station on Friday,” said Matt. “She didn’t do that?”

“Nope,” Patty said. “And it’s starting to annoy me. I could do some research and find his name, but I want Blake to provide me with her contact info. If I don’t have an email from her by the time we’re done here, I’ll call her. We need to know when she left and where she was after Wednesday morning. That’s the last time anyone at the resort can unequivocally confirm they saw her. Right now, in my mind, Blake Bowen does not have an airtight alibi.”

“Thanks, Patty,” Matt said. “Stay on this. It smells like old fish. Dan, did you guys get to the Blue Moon Motel yesterday?”

McCoy nodded in Earl’s direction. “Yep, the sheriff and I paid them a call, and took your Rudy with us for muscle because their clientele can be unsavory. By the way, did you know Rudy caught a burglar for us when you were in the hospital?”

“Oh, yes,” Matt laughed, “I’ve heard that story more than once. Rudy’s turning into a good cop. I’m glad we have him.”

“He is sharper than you think just by the looks of him. He’s awful pretty, but he gets the job done,” joked McCoy.

“My wife Milly has a major crush on him,” Ed deadpanned. He flashed a mischievous look at Jay. “You’d be advised to keep your new girlfriend away from young Rudy.”

Bernice was the first to pile on Jay. “You have a new girlfriend? How did we not know this little factoid?”

“Maybe because it’s none of your business?” Jay said. “And because it’s not an appropriate topic of discussion during a major crime team meeting.”

“Nice try, Jay,” said Patty. “We’ll eventually find out who this lucky woman is, you know. We’re detectives.”

Jay sat smiling with his hands clasped across his stomach. It was a defensive, ‘I’m not-talking’ posture.

Matt knew that the last thing Jay wanted was for his girlfriend’s boss, police chief Dan McCoy, to know they were dating, so he changed the subject and got his friend off the hook. “You were saying, Dan? The Blue Moon Motel?”

“Right,” said McCoy. “Earl and I spoke to the general manager. He was the one who made the call to Hannah at 12:20 p.m. on the day she was murdered. He called her, as we suspected, because he had an out-of-control addict in his parking lot harassing customers.”

“Why call her?” Jay asked. “Why not call your department?”

“That’s what we asked him,” McCoy said. “He and Hannah had a kind of agreement. Because he often deals with homeless people, and because many of them have mental health or substance abuse issues, Hannah asked him to let her organization try to help them first before automatically throwing them in jail.
